Buyers of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid Sedan are eligible for a one-time tax credit of up to $1,150 and will also enjoy the perk of greater fuel efficiency than the S550 at 19 miles per gallon. The S400 Hybrid Sedan has an MSRP of $87,950 and features a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and electric motor for a combined 295 horsepower and a 7-speed automatic transmission with Touch Shift.
Unlike most hybrid models, the S400 comes with a lithium-ion battery that is small enough to fit into the engine compartment. Due to its small size and engine compartment location, the battery does not rob interior or cargo space from the vehicle. Combined, the electric motor and gas-fed engine perform on par with the S550, which sports a much larger engine.
